Education

At the heart of every thriving community is a robust education system, one that sets high standards and provides unwavering support for all students. Ward 7 deserves nothing less. As a Ward 7 native who was educated right here in DC, a mother whose sons are educated here, a former PAVE Parent Representative, and a former MySchool DC Advisory Councilmember, I have the experience to understand what our schools need and the connections to get us there. Our focus must be comprehensive, addressing the infrastructure, curriculum, and the holistic development of our children. Education is not just about the classroom; it's about creating lifelong learners who are well-equipped to navigate the world and contribute meaningfully to society.

VEDA'S PLAN

1. Prioritizing Safety and Well-being

  • Safe Passage Investments: Every student should feel safe in their journey to and from school. Boosting the Safe Passage program is not an option; it's a necessity.

  • Enhanced Mental Health Support: With rising challenges, extending mental health provisions in schools is vital. This will mitigate classroom disruptions, reduce truancy, and ensure healthier, happier students.

2. Building Stronger Community Bonds

  • Community Engagement: Schools must be community hubs. Encourage interactions between students, teachers, and community members to foster a collaborative spirit.

  • Transparency in Spending: Families deserve to understand how resources are allocated. Clear and open communication about spending ensures trust and accountability.

3. Empowering through Literacy

  • Literacy for Liberation: With only 32% of fourth-grade students meeting or surpassing literacy proficiency levels, targeted interventions are crucial. Literacy is the bedrock upon which all other learning stands.

  • Empowering Educators: Offer accessible training opportunities and incentives for teachers to continually refine their literacy teaching methodologies.

 4. Raising the Bar across the Board

  • Facility Maintenance: Our schools are a reflection of our commitment to education. Maintaining them in impeccable condition is not just about aesthetics; it's about creating a conducive learning environment.

  • Resource Availability: Equip classrooms with up-to-date materials and technology, ensuring every student and teacher has the tools they need to succeed.

  • Elevated Standards: Both teachers and students should be held to exemplary standards, driving excellence in teaching and learning.

5. Championing Inclusive Education

  • Addressing Disparities: The widening achievement gap for students with disabilities is unacceptable. We must overhaul the system, eliminating complexities and ensuring a seamless integration of students with disabilities.

  • Transparency and Accountability: With DC ranking alarmingly low in transitioning students from special education, it's evident that we need reform. Through periodic assessments and transparent reporting, we can rectify systemic issues.

As your councilwoman, my promise is unwavering. Every child in Ward 7, irrespective of their background, capabilities, or challenges, deserves an education that opens doors, broadens horizons, and provides the platform for success. Together, we can transform our schools into beacons of excellence, where every student is poised to achieve greatness.
